I did the primary study for this weblog series a couple of decades back. Then, as common, flitted along to the up coming factor that caught my fascination. The Cambrian of Saturday October 19th 1805 claimed:
“A human being of the name of Meredith Arthur, who resided near Brecon, and who, by his penurious method of residing, had obtained a smaller residence, attended the sale of some estates at the Lion Inn on Saturday previous: he experienced ordered one particular good deal, but having drank way too freely, and his highway home being by the canal, he fell into it, and was drowned. What is a minimal amazing, when he was to start with discovered, he was found standing approximately upright in the drinking water, with his hat on his head and his employees in his hand. An inquest was held on the human body on Monday, and the jury returned a verdict of accidental death. This is the 2nd fatal incident which has took place on this canal in just the previous twelve months through inebriety.”

Meredith had been baptised at Nantmel, Radnorshire, on Oct 30th 1745.
We upcoming listen to of him in 1754, inheriting as the nephew of Winifred Coslet. Yet another probate history exhibits him inheriting as the nephew of Thomas Jones in Novemer 1765.
On July 6th 1802 Arthur married Anne Watkins at Llanfihangel Tallyllyn. Anne was born c. 1741 that means the bride and groom have been 61 and 57 respectively.
The couple lived jointly at Llansantffraed in Brecon – until eventually the fateful Saturday (Oct 12th) Meredith chose to go consuming just after obtaining a ton at an estate sale held at the Lion Inn. The inquest into his dying was held on Monday Oct 14th, and he was buried on Wednesday October 16th 1805 at Llansanffraid-Ar-Wysg. The burial register describes him – to some degree unfairly! – as possessing ‘drowned himself in the canal.’
Anne lived on a very little extended but was buried on April 9th 1807.
